Subconscious Biases – IDEDE Oseyande

Some days back, I was telling a friend of mine about the news from the church we both attend. In Christendom, we call it testimonies. At the end of my narration, I told him that the news seemed to be carried only by members of the church, as no media house carried it. Then I jokingly said, I know you believe the testimonies because our General Superintendent is involved, if it were another church, you would start to ask “rational questions”. He laughed and acquiesced to the fact that we all nurse some level of biases.

We make decisions every now and then. We choose what to believe and what to discard, who to move with, and those to abstain from. While we carry out all these actions, we think we are being rational and logical, we oppose any view that tends to point out our biases. In all honesty, we have subconscious biases, but it is ok to live with that😜.

As the campaign for the general elections has officially kicked off, friends and families will choose what to believe, in line with their biases. Some will believe that Buhari, despite the glaring evidence proving his moral culpability as corrupt, is a man of integrity. How an ex-head of state and a retired army general that was never stripped of his entitlements can be described as poor, makes sense to them.

On the other hand, some that once described all politicians as liars suddenly believed that Atiku will keep to his words if elected, as contained in his sixty-three-page manifesto. They will tell you competence is better than character, forgetting the fact that he might not even keep to his words if his character takes prominence.

Others will explain to you how Oby, Sowore, Duke or Durotoye would shock the world with their emergence come 2019.

You don’t need to argue unnecessarily with anyone. Go to those unconverted electorates while canvassing for votes and leave anyone already queuing behind a candidate. Nigeria election is not worth losing the understanding and affection of our loved ones.

Election nor be war!
Campaign with decorum
Vote not to fight…

We wish you a hitch-free campaign period!
