The event took place as scheduled on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at the Council Chamber of the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure, Ondo State.

Present at the event were the Patron of the Alumni Board, Aare Afe Babalola, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) and an alumnus of FUTA, Professor Ojo, the Chairman of the board, Engineer Biodun Faleke, and some of the board members, other board members were unavoidably absent.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, who declared the epoch event open, eulogized the ingenuity of the Alumni body and commended the members of the board.

He made it clear in his remarks that the 21st centuries Universities are not just meant for teaching and conducting researches as it was the case in the past, but that they are now big complexes that are demanding and meant for competitive businesses, adding that Nigerian universities are plagued with the challenge of funding.

He further stated that the University, which was established by the act of parliament in 1981, has six schools with a population of 20,000 students with an Alumni strength of 45,000.

He concluded that FUTA, as an institution, can tap into this and that FUTA Alumni Association should be encouraged to institute a trust fund with a mandate to raise at least N15 Million annually from graduates of the university as part of their contributions to the development of the university.

The President of FUTA Alumni Association worldwide, Comrade Adesomoju Olaitan Adesanya in his address, appreciated all the members of the board and the dignitaries that were present at the inauguration for their commitments and vision for the university.

He said in his speech that “Education is recognized globally as a tool to enhance socio-economic prosperity and combat disease and support sustainable growth and development and advancement of any nation.

“It is therefore important that an Alumni association like ours should be directly involved in generating resources for our alma mata as one of the interventions that can actually protect her future.

“Alumni association is the most passionate, potent and sincere giver to the institution due to their loyalty to their alma mata.”

Adesanya further encouraged members of the board to be prepared to make FUTA the best university in Nigeria.

He stated that FUTA is known for her capacity building and as the leading university in researches, and that it is therefore imperative for every alumnus of the Institution to ensure that the institution maintained the lead.

The chairman of the inauguration and the Patron of the Alumni Trust Fund, Aare Afe Babalola in his speech, commended the President of the Alumni Association, Comrade Adesomoju Olaitan Adesanya for his doggedness, effectiveness and for his quest to make FUTA Alumni association better than he met it.

Aare Babalola made references to Stanford University in the United States of America, where he said that the alumni of the institution contribute more than the total budget of over 200 Nigerian Universities in one year put together through donations to the university.

“No wonder, Stanford University has produced over 30 living billionaires in dollars, 17 Astronauts, leading producers, members of the US Congress and over 60 Nobel laureates.

“The University can only have a sustainable and monumental development, when the alumni body is active and participatory,” he said.

The Patron also noted that the FUTA ought to have launched her Trust Fund earlier before now to make the institution a place to be.

Babalola stressed that he expected the alumni of the university to treat it like their biological father, saying that a child will obviously cater for and pamper his father to keep him alive.

dependent on government’s subventions.”

He therefore, enjoined the Alumni association of FUTA to rise to the challenge of taking the institution to a greater height by donating handsomely to the development of the institution.

The celebrated lawyer then set the ball rolling with handsome donation to open a Trust Fund account for the institution. and several others made donations in support to make the dream a reality.

He appreciated the alumni for the opportunity given to him to chair the inauguration event.

The chairman of the association, Comrade Adeshina promised to do all within his capacity to ensure that the Trust Fund meets its cardinal objectives and adds values to the development of FUTA.
