2016 Budget defence: NASS to summon NSC, NFF
From ROMANUS UGWU, Abuja
IN line with parliamentary tradition, members of both chambers of the National Assembly would soon forward an official letter, inviting the Ministry of Sports, National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and other agencies and parastatals under the ministry to appear before it to defend the 2016 annual budget estimate.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Obinna Ogba, who made the disclosure in a chat with Daily Sunsports in Abuja, insisted that his committee would not shy away from drilling the eggheads of the Sports Commission, NFF and other agencies in line with the parliamentary procedures.
Asked when the agencies and parastatals appear before his committee, Senator Ogba said: “We have just started debate on the budget proposal.
“We are going to officially write the National Sports Commission (NSC), Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and agencies under the Sports Ministry very soon. I can tell you it will not exceed this month because we are doing everything possible to pass the budget as soon as possible,” he noted.
Senator equally expressed joy over the reception, President Muhammadu Buhari extended to the Nigerian sportsmen and women that distinguished themselves at various continental and international tournaments, adding that it gladdened his heart because it happened during his tenure as chairman Senate Committee on Sports.
“I feel so good that President Buhari honoured our sportsmen and women. Essentially, it is even more gladdening that it happened during my time as the chairman Senate Committee on Sports. The reception was even delighting, considering the fact that he was able to redeem the promise he made as Military Head of State to the Kodak Cup-winning 1985 U-17 team.
